What exactly is web hosting?

To have a web site on the internet you need two things: a domain name and a hosting package.

Your domain name points to a server where your website's files are physically stored. When someone types in your domain name, your computer looks to the domain record to see where it should go to find your website. It then goes to the location it is given and the server sends the website to the browser. We provide these servers!

How long does it take to set up?

We register your domain and set up your package instantly. Unfortunately, it may take up to 24 hours for the world's domain name system to pick up the changes so, although your website may be uploaded to the server, it may not be recognised for a few hours while the internet "catches up". During this time it is a good idea to log in to the control panel and configure your e-mail addresses, databases and so on so you are ready to go as soon as possible.

What happens when I sign up?

We will automatically send you confirmation e-mails which acknowledge your order and payment, contain the login details for your control panel and welcome you to our hosting network. How do I update my website?

Content can be uploaded via the popular File Transfer Protocol, FTP (or SCP/SFTP on the Advanced package), for which we recommend the free SmartFTP software.

We provide the popular phpMyAdmin to manage databases, available through the 'MySQL databases' section of cPanel.

Are there any blog software or CMS systems available?
